The charger is pretty efficient too, swiftly rejuvenating the battery in less than thirty minutes.

  • Keyless chuck
  • A bit noisy at maximum power

Considered by many as the best cordless drill available in the market to this day, the Bosch PSB 1800 comes packed with a pair of 1.5Ah Lithium-Ion batteries – which is great, especially for professionals that hate running out of juice without having finished their job.

With a charger capable of rejuvenating both batteries in less than 60 minutes, and a weight that barely exceeds 3 lbs, Bosch PSB 1800 affords mobility, flexibility, and ease of use. Very comfortable to use and not the least slippery, even with your hands drenched with water, it allows you to work with it for great amounts of time without tiring your hand.

Other nice features include its keyless chuck, allowing rotation to continue regardless of whether you have the key or not, and a two-speed gearbox, allowing you to tailor its function to any type of work, no matter how delicate or rough.

Aside from its drilling might, great steadiness and excellent functionality, this drill comes with no less than 20 pre-selectable torque settings, as well as several other features that are usually found in much more expensive models.

Note that you also have the option to use it for driving fixings – which you should never take for granted with cordless or even corded drills. For less than half the price of some of its competitors, you get an excellent drill, a ratchet screwdriver, all the bits you could possibly ever need, along with 11 masonry-, 11 metal- and 8 wood drill-bits!

So, it is clear enough that the Bosch PSB 1800 truly excels at rounded efficiency. True, there are drills more powerful than this one, but few people, mostly professionals would realise. Most handy-men and semi-professional craftsmen would barely notice it.

Our Opinion

The Bosch PSB 1800 Combi Drill is an excellent option, equipped with everything you might possibly need (including two batteries), cleverly designed, and, most of all, efficient. True, it could be a bit more powerful, but most users would never face a task that could actually bring up this deficiency.

One of the best things about it is that it comes with 2 lithium batteries, allowing you to continue to work even if you run out of juice but you are not finished. True, the battery does not last as much as those of some more pricier competitors but coming in two, you’ll have no problem.

The quick-change chuck is pretty handy too, as well as its two-speed mechanism, which helps the inexperienced hand and averts the risk of damaging the surface you work on, especially wood.

Moving up the price range, we also take the construction quality and efficiency several notches up. Designed for professionals and heavy-duty tasks, DeWalt’s 18V cordless drill is a force to be reckoned with and one of the best cordless drills in today’s market.

At a Glance

  • Brand: DeWalt
  • Weight: 3.6 Kg
  • Dimensions: 38.5 x 35 x 11.5 cm
  • Batteries: 1 Lithium-ion battery included
  • Voltage: 18 volts

Design & Features

The DeWalt 18V cordless COMBI hammer drill is a mighty tool that affords great drilling power to the user. While obviously intended for seasoned craftsmen ill cater to the needs of a professional craftsman, it is easy to use, with a nicely curved grip that fits neatly into the palm and does not wear out the hand.

Aside from the weight, which is more or less 8 lbs, its design and array of features is just great. Besides, you should remember that its might negates any need to hold it for more than a few seconds, since whatever you think of doing with it, be it drilling, screwing, scrubbing, polishing etc. will be probably over in less than a minute. It will effortlessly tackle any given drilling project, including hard and dense wood, metal and masonry.

Most of its weight is because of the battery, which lasts considerably longer than any cheaper model and most of its similarly-priced competitors. Unfortunately, it comes with just one battery, which may put off a professional, but buying an extra battery is not so difficult.

The charger is great too, having it fully recharged in less than 60 minutes. All the kit with its bits and accessories comes nicely packaged in a heavy-duty carrying case.

  • Strong and robustly built
  • Very efficient
  • Easy to use
  • Durable
  • It could be a bit lighter

Our Opinion

True, DeWalt’s suggestion is not exactly cheap, but it sure isn’t overpriced either. Robust, compact, powerful, efficient and able to tackle heavy-duty projects and cater to the needs of a professional craftsman.

Cordless Drill Buying Guide

There is no need to elaborate on how important a drill is for a craftsman, professional and amateur alike. With it, you can do all sorts of DIY projects, from making the simplest piece of furniture, like a chair or a kitchen cupboard, to much more demanding heavy-duty tasks, like constructing a deck or remodelling a kitchen.

But it is not just drilling: a drill can be also used as a screwdriver, a scrubber, a polisher etc. with the proper head mounted in the front.

Now, if this is true for drills in general, how much more for cordless drills! Running on batteries, they can be easily carried everywhere, on roofs, yards, isolated areas etc., without restricting the user’s movement, minimising the risk of damaging the drill or electrocuting yourself with a clumsy move, and being able to work in places and spots without power source available.

True, cordless power drills have their cons: they are usually not so strong and robust as corded ones and they may run out of juice in the middle of the work, but they have plenty of other advantages – provided you make a wise choice when you buy one.

Below, you will find out some key features you need to keep an eye out for while searching the market for a decent cordless drill.

A Few Basics

First of all, you need to learn a few things about cordless drills before purchasing one.

Most modern-day cordless drills run on lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, whose advanced technology delivers more power (almost 50%) for longer periods of time – and with overall weight.

Another pretty standard feature to all new cordless drills models is the new brushless motor, which a few years ago could only be found to high-end drills designed for professional craftsmen. Today, you can find it even in much cheaper models.

The great thing about brushless motors is that they adjust their running rate to the work in hand, whereas brushed ones run at the same speed at all times, wearing out the tool, producing more friction and thus making each job much more difficult to handle. Maintenance cost is higher too in brushed motors.

Voltage – Why is it so Important?

In many reviews and descriptions of cordless drills, you will find several comments about the voltage of the drill. Why is it so important to know that?

Because the voltage defines the type of the drill, hence its best use. In other words, by knowing and understanding the voltage, you can understand whether the drill that caught your eye can indeed do the jobs you want it for.

Let us dig in a little deeper.

First, the bigger the voltage, the bigger the weight and size of the drill. Naturally, there are exceptions to this rule – and when you find one you should really grab it – but generally, this is the case. Usually, the biggest voltage you can find is 24 volts (which is only for professionals), then you drop to 20 and 18 Volts and then to 12 Volts.

Now, the bigger the voltage, the mightier the drill. The 20s and 18s are best picks for professionals or homeowners that plan to use the drill for really heave tasks and for continuous use. If you simply want something for house chores, furniture assemblies and DIY projects, opt for a 12-volt cordless drill.

Types Based on the Job

You can generally divide the cordless drills available to three categories:

  • Heavy-Duty.
  • General-Use.
  • Light-Duty.

Still, don’t expect to find these designations on the box of on the manufacturer’s product description on the internet. They have no reason to narrow down their possible buyer pool. You will have to figure it out based on the voltage and what you read about it.

Another way to check this out is the cuck diameter. The bigger it is, the biggest bits it can hold, the heavier the job it can handle. Note that the biggest chucks you can find in the market is ½-inch, while light-duty chucks have the standard 1/4 –inch socket, suitable only for the conventional hex-shaped bits.

What About the Grips?

This another feature you will hear a lot about – the grip. Why is that so important?

obviously, because it affects the time the user can hold the drill, as well as is its stability and efficiency. Drilling involves a lot of vibration and making a hole is often a very delicate task that requires precision. So, the better the grip, the better the drill.

What About the Kit?

Most drills come with a kit of drill heads and bits to sweeten up the deal. Obviously, one could reasonably claim that the more you get, the better, but this is not always the case, especially if you consider the quality of the bits, as well as portability.

Someone who wants to carry constantly the drill around in its case maybe would prefer something small. On the other hand, someone would rather have a single large kit with everything in it instead of several small cases. So, long story short, it is up to you whether a large kit would be better or worse for you.

Also note that often the bigger the selection of bits, the poorer their quality.

What About the Batteries?

Most cordless drills come equipped with a single battery, but some come with a pair, which is, of course, great, because you will be able to continue your work even of the first battery dies out. On the other hand, a pair of batteries usually ups the price.

Other manufacturers simply prefer to provide a single battery that is of better quality and lasts longer and leave the buyer the option to buy another one.

Generally, you should steer clear from cordless drills that are provided with the battery or the charger, even if the price seems incredibly good.

As to the charger, the faster it recharges the better – obviously. But how fast is “fast”? Well, if you hear about a charger that can do the job – that is, fully charge the battery – in around an hour or so, then this is great. Not that if some need a couple of minutes more is bad, but if you have some specs saying that it recharges in 90 minutes, then you will probably want to opt for a kit with a pair of batteries, and thus be able to continue your work until it is done.
