  • Folded dimensions: approx. 11.8 x 17.7 x 56 inches (30 x 45 x 142 cm)
  • Folding Mechanism and Curved Design for Space-Saving

Design & Features

The first thing we need to point out about the Ultrasport F-Bike is that it is designed for people that just wish to get or stay fit – nothing more, nothing less. It not for ardent athletes that exercise vigorously every day. If you use it for that, it will not last for long. Besides, a semi-professional athlete will not find its resistance levels challenging enough.

Note, for example, its relatively low maximum weight user – which is not unreasonable though for an exercise bike of this price range. Besides, F-Bike was designed to be lightweight, compact and portable, so the low MUW makes sense.

Assemblage is very easy; you just have to attach the pedals, seat and handlebars to the frame – a chore that barely took me 20 minutes.

Let us turn our attention to the overall design, which, is actually great: minimal yet elegant, with bright colours and a slim yet convincingly sturdy skeleton, it does succeed in providing a stable and pleasant workout, while taking up little space in the room.

A few words about the display: it is battery-powered (which is good, for the fewer cords the better) and LCD (like in most decent models nowadays) and monitors the user’s heart rate, calories burned, speed, time and distance, while allowing you to track your progress over the course of time – which is just perfect. As expected, the heart rate sensors are located on the handlebars.

Now, regarding performance, as already said, workout has been smooth and pleasant, without any discomforting push-back tension that often denotes poor flywheel design and construction quality. The pedals come strapped for safer pedalling, which is a “must-have” even for an entry-level model like this one. The seat is adjustable, allowing the user to train without straining his/her back or spine.

The best thing about it is its eight different resistance levels, enabling the user to select a workout that suits his or her fitness level, experience and goals. For an entry-level model, an 8-level resistance is excellent.

When it comes to noise, it simply excelled. It is amazingly quiet, which makes it an ideal choice for apartments or moms with edgy toddlers that wake up very easily.

I left for the finale what is probably the most amazing feature of this bike, which is its folding mechanism! It reduces the space taken by the bike by at least 30%, making its storage a breeze. It is actually one of the few models that can easily fit into a closet and taken out only when you plan to use it.

Pros
  • Great design, folding mechanism makes it compact and portable
  • Ideal for getting or staying fit
  • Ideal for small apartments
  • Easy to assemble
  • Excellent price
Cons
  • Certainly not for ardent athletes and intense training

Our Opinion

Ultrasound’s F-Bike is hands down one of the best, if not the best, entry-level exercise in the market. Ideal for people who just wish to get or stay in shape, it is reliable and comes at an excellent price.

2. Circuit Fitness 150 Foldable Bike

Introduction

Another entry-level exercise bike, the Circuit Fitness 1500 Foldable Bike is designed for light exercise and averagely built people, and is as compact and portable as an exercise bike could ever be!

  • Textured Non-Slip Pedals
Ergonomically designed pedals for Secure Feet Grip
    Anti-Slip/Slide Straps
  • Foldable Design
    Space-Saving for Easy Storage

Design & Features

The Circuit Fitness 1500 stands on a well-designed and reliable steel frame, able to support bodies of up to 300 pounds – impressive for an exercise bike of this price. The steel tubing is also reinforced with a powder finish, affording durability against chips and scratches. Its engineered structure facilitates proper body form during movement, allowing you to target specific areas of your body.

Safety has obviously been a priority for the manufacturer. The already conspicuously large pedals are equipped with safety loops that stabilise the feet, for a more secure and comfortable ride.

An undoubtable trait of its design is, of course, its foldability. Lightweight and compact, it can be easily stored in a closet or cupboard, making it an ideal choice for small apartments.

We really enjoyed the large, cushioned seat, which is obviously designed to accommodate users of different body sizes. As you will see, a comfortable seat, especially for people of all statures, is not a given in exercise bikes. This one, though, was one of the most comfortable we tried.

Customisation is fine – considering this is an entry-level exercise bike. This machine comes with a magnetic resistance system that features pre-set levels of resistance that simulate the effects of biking on different terrains. The resistance can be adjusted through the tension knob, allowing you to control and customize the workout.

Apart from the seat, though, heftier people will find it hard to enjoy biking on this model. The wobble will be considerable, and the seat and handlebars will probably prove a bit short.

The bike comes with a handy LCD display that tracks time, pulse rate, current speed, distance travelled, and calories burned. For the casual rider, there is also a handy media rack for placing a tablet, phone, or even a book.

Pros
  • Great design
  • Folding mechanism for easy storage
  • Ideal for getting or staying fit
  • Ideal for small apartments
  • Value for money
Cons
  • Not for ardent athletes and intense training
  • Not suitable for hefty riders

Our Opinion

The Circuit Fitness 1500 Foldable Bike is an excellent entry-level choice – affordable, suitable for light exercise and averagely built people with little room to spare in their apartments.

3. JLL RE100 Recumbent Home Exercise Bike

Introduction

One thing is for sure, the JLL RE100 looks far more comfortable than any other exercise bike of our list! In fact, it’s innovative sitting position design is its most distinguishing characteristic – along with its rather alluring price. Let us dig in and see if there are other traits in this model.

  • Warranty Type: Home Use Only

Design & Features

JLL exercise models are known for their combination of sturdiness and affordable price. This one has added comfort to the list.

The main unit comes already assembled, so in 20-30 minutes at most, you will be ready to use it. Designed for averagely built people (maximum user weight at 220 pounds) who just want to burn some extra calories and improve their stamina, but not for fitness enthusiasts, the JLL RE100 was designed to accommodate the user’s back at an almost upright position, putting much less strain on the undrilled muscles of a beginner. This position is also ideal for people with chronic back pains or similar health problems.

Actually, there are several indications of the efforts the designers made to improve the comfort of the workout session. Notice, for example, the anti-slip grips and straps of the pedals, as well as the unusually large seat, and the backrest and arm grips below, which allow the user to recline while pedalling, instead of bending forward. With 6 different adjustment levels, you can optimise its position to match your height and stature.

Of course, comfort comes at a price when it comes to portability and space. JLL RE100 is not exactly “compact” and is quite heavy. You will just have to pick a position in your house and leave it there on a permanent basis.

On the other hand, its weight and stretched-out frame afford great stability to the bike, which is essential for a smooth and, most of all, safe workout, especially if you pick a high resistance setting – which are eight in this model. Also note that resistance is not manual in this model, but magnetic, which is much more efficient and smoother.

The console seems a bit dated, but provides all the necessary information, including speed, heart rate (sensors in the handlebars), burned calories, and covered distance. Unfortunately, covered distance is displayed only in kilometres, and not miles, which is a bit disappointing.

Noise is nothing close to silent, but certainly not disturbing, especially for a person in an adjacent room.

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
  • Value for money
  • Amazingly comfortable design, with a backrest
  • Ideal for beginners and people with chronic aches in the back
Cons
  • A bit bulky
  • The console could use an upgrade

Our Opinion

Coming at a more than reasonable price, JLL RE100 is solidly constructed and boasts unrivalled comfort. If you have the space needed and you just want to get or stay in shape, it is an excellent pick.

  • Smooth and Quiet: Infinite resistance system and Belt Drive System for an almost silent ride
  • Wool felt brake pad for timely, safe and convenient emergency stop brake while pressing the button

Design & Features

As already mentioned, the design is meant to emphasize durability and gym-like strength. Indeed, the manufacturer has succeeded in combining several advanced features with user-friendliness.

I should mention that Dripex Exercise Bike has been around for years, in several editions. This one is the 2019 edition, which is improved in terms of comfort and design. It has a new casing, with double-sided protection. This means that it also got a bit bulkier and heavier for improved stability.

Body customisation is top-notch too, with 6 different settings for the seat and height of the handlebars.

Dripex designers also improved safety: they added an anti-slip coating to the pedals, which was a major oversight to older models, as well as toe cages and an emergency stop brake. Combined with the even sturdier frame is allows very intense training even for heavy and tall athletes. Besides, the maximum user weight is now at 330 lbs.

The flywheel is similarly well-built, and it is combined with a great feature – the adjustable limitless resistance, allowing the user to increase again and again the difficulty level of his/her training. Adjustment is simple enough too: all you need to do is turn a knob.

The console provides in a clear-cut way all the necessary information (time, speed, covered distance, heart rate and calories). There are no fancy automatic programmes though, which, to be sure, are not standard for this price range, can be found in some models. Still, these bikes are inferior in construction quality and durability.

Noise levels are more than acceptable. Remember, we are talking about a heavy-duty bike, designed for vigorous training. Some noise is expected, especially at this price range, but even that is nothing that could be described as irritating for a bystander.

Pros
  • Great design
  • Affordable
  • Improved safety
  • Sturdy and durable
  • Infinite adjustable resistance knob
  • Suitable both for beginners and more experienced amateur athletes
Cons
  • A bit bulky
  • Automatic programs could be more elaborate

Our Opinion

Beautiful design, sturdy construction, improved safety and an infinite adjustable resistance knob make Dripex Exercise Bike an excellent pick both for beginners and athletes who need an exercise bike that could constantly provide new challenges for them.

5. Famyfamy Spin Bike – Value-for-Money

Introduction

Moving up the price scale a bit, we present the Famyfamy Spin Bike. Designed to be stable, even when used by heavy and tall athletes, the Famyfamy Spin Bike boasts excellent construction quality and durability as its winning traits.

Adjust upwards or downwards up to 6’’ (15cm)
  • Metal bike pedals secured to the steel frame and reinforced with rubberized foot guards for safe riding
  • Base frame outfitted with a specialized adjustment system for excellent stability no matter what setting

Design & Features

Let us start with the design and overall construction. Featuring an elegant combination of black and green colours and a nice curvy frame, the Famyfamy Spin Bike will surely make your apartment look cooler.

The whole frame is made from solid steel, mastering a sturdiness and reliability that is instantly felt as soon as you ride it. It can sustain weights of more than 260 pounds, but so do other models. The best thing about its frame is that when used by someone of such weight and stature it remains highly stable, with minimum vibrations, mainly thanks to the specialized adjustment system This is a very important trait that makes cycling much more pleasant and, most of all, safe. The bike pedals are made of metal too, while reinforced with rubberized foot guards.

Customisation is excellent too. With simple knob twists, you can adjust both the seat and the handlebars. Some models have great user weight capacity, but coming short in customisation, do not actually allow heftier people to use it properly. That is not the case with this model. You can adjust the seat upwards or downwards up to 6.7 inches, forward or backwards up to 2 inches, while the handlebars have an adjustment upwards or downwards radius of 6 inches. I personally found the seat a bit less comfortable, but this is always somehow subjective.

Great customisation applies to the resistance levels too, making this model an excellent pick for users of all fitness levels: you can adjust the bike’s resistance and ensure the perfect workout for your body, stamina and skill level. The noise level is acceptable and certainly not annoying, but it proved considerably higher than that of some of the similarly-priced models.

Pros
  • Fantastic design
  • Value for money
  • Zero vibrations, excellent stability even with hefty users
  • Great customisation, regarding both the frame and resistance levels
  • Suitable both for beginners and seasoned athletes
Cons
  • The seat could be a bit more comfortable
  • Noise level is acceptable, but a bit higher than some of its competitors

Our Opinion

Stylish, amazingly stable, durable, and easy to customise, this one is surely one of the best exercise bikes of its price range.

6. Nero Sports Bluetooth Upright Exercise Bike The Best Choice

Introduction

Slightly higher in the price scale, the Nero Sports Upright Exercise Bike has what it takes to convince to… go the extra mile. While remaining well within the “budget-friendly” zone, it offers features and construction quality usually found in pricier models.

  • Pulse Sensors/ Heart rate monitor
  • Super soft seat
  • Water Bottle
  • Fully Adjustable Seat and handles
  • 3 Piece Crank
  • Warranty: 5 Years
  • Toe Clips
  • Transport Wheels for easy movement

Design & Features

Featuring a nice black and yellow colour combination, the Nero Sports Upright Exercise Bike both look and feel sturdy, featuring an elegant tubular steel frame. Fitted with transport wheels for easy movement and a 3-piece crank for a more efficient energy transfer, it rises as an excellent value for money option for people who plan to exercise both frequently and intensely throughout the week.

Equipped with a 26.5-pound flywheel, it surely proved stable enough for a smooth ride, despite testing it with a person weighing close to its MUW limit. Adjustability is excellent. Both the seat and handlebars can be tailored to your stature. Other nice design features include the toe clips on the pedals and the water bottle; the last one was indeed a surprise since it is usually found in pricier models.

As to performance, the slightly higher noise level was the only flaw we could find. The noise is not produced by the flywheel, as we would expect, but from the joints of the frame. It can be minimised with a somehow tighter screwing, but it still produces a discernible squeak.

Other than that, the workout has been a sheer delight. The multiple resistance levels enable a challenging workout regardless of your fitness level. Just turn the knob to suit your needs and select the proper resistance level. The on-board computer measuring speed, time, distance, calories and heart rate, which is now equipped with pulse sensors too – a necessary feature for HIIT style workouts.

A cool feature is the iPad – Smartphone stand, enabling you to watch your favourite show while working out – a great addition for those of us who are actually bored of exercising and need something to take their mind away.

Pros
  • Several cool features
  • Reasonably priced
  • Suitable for athletes of all levels
  • Great adjustability
Cons
  • Some squeaking is to be expected from the frame joints

Our Opinion

Beautifully designed, solidly constructed, Smart-tech friendly, Nero Sports exercise bike offers an array of top-notch features for an excellent price. If you don’t mind the squeaking, it is an option you should definitely consider, especially if you wish to steer clear from more expensive models.

7. JLL IC400 PRO Indoor Cycling Exercise Bike

  • Extra’s: SPD compatible pedals and a gel seat cover come as standard with this model
  • Transport: Built-in Wheels for Easy Transport
  • Warranty: 12 Months
  • Warranty Type: Home Use Only

Design & Features

Assembly is easy and can be easily done within 20 minutes from someone with small experience with such sort of stuff. The frame comes assembled and the only thing you have to do is basically to attach the pedals and seat.

Let us devote a few words to the design, which was meant to be compact for easy storage in wardrobes or cupboards. Despite its considerable weight, its transport wheels make it relatively easy to push and move around, making it an ideal pick for small apartments – especially if you take into account its low noise level, which is scarcely noticeable from the next room.

If you prefer to set it a permanent position, it will certainly not ruin your décor. It black and red colour and modular frame are both stylish and discreet; In a dim corner are barely visible.

You will happy to see that this model features an advanced belt driver system, which is far more reliable and requires less maintenance compared to chain-driven motion systems, especially when combined with an almost 45-lb flywheel. The pedals are equipped with toe cages, which minimise any risk of foot slips, making the ride smoother and safer, especially during intense workouts. Our workout proved extremely stable, with almost zero wobbles.

As expected from an exercise bike of this range, adjustability is not an issue. Being its resistance levels (frictional resistance mechanism in this model instead of magnetic), the seat of the handlebars, you will easily figure how to customise it to your preferences and needs. The best thing about customisation is that it easy. Just a twist on the toggles and you are done – ideal for households where several members of the family wish to use the machine.

The console displays the usual data (time, distance, speed, calories, rpm etc.), but the machine is also equipped with pulse sensors, which makes it possible to try a HIIT workout, thus maximising the gain from your sessions. Note, though, that is available only with a heart rate band or smartwatch.

In a model that proves again and again that its manufacturer tended to every detail, the seat was a small disappointment. Is was not so uncomfortable as to cause pain, but it certainly did not keep up with the premium quality of the rest of the bike, despite its leather pad. Still, much depends on the user’s body type and weight. The good thing is that, if you find it uncomfortable too, you can simply replace it, or use a seat gel.

Noise is discernible – surely not as low as we would expect at this price level, but certainly more than acceptable.

Pros
  • Prime construction quality
  • Reliable, sturdy
  • Minimal maintenance
  • Stable and smooth ride
  • Value for money
Cons
  • The seat may prove a bit uncomfortable to some
  • Frictional resistance instead of magnetic

Our Opinion

Packed with advanced features and boasting a sturdy and amazingly stable frame, it is indeed no wonder that the JLL IC400 PRO has been such a popular choice over the last years.

Exercise Bike Buying Guide

Most people are more or less familiar with the basic characteristics of an exercise bike. Being around for several decades, it has been one of the most first workout machines popularised and widely used among amateur athletes.

It is easy to see why: exercise bikes are a pleasant and easy alternative to outdoor workouts or the gym while allowing the user to watch TV or his / her favourite program, listen to some inspiring music, keeping the kids under supervision and sticking to the workout schedule whatever the weather.

Their undeniable benefits have made them so popular, that they are now available literally from hundreds of manufacturers and even more types, with diverse features and characteristics.

Hence, if you have just started your research, it is logical to feel a bit overwhelmed. The following points and tips will probably clear out some things for you and make things simpler.

Step 1: Take a Realistic View of your Goals

This is the first and probably most important step before picking an exercise bike. Please, mind the word “realistic”! All of us have done this mistake – probably more than once. We start off with vigour and enthusiasm, only to realise that we could not keep up with the workout schedule we first came up with and take it down a notch or two.

The problem is that we often decide to buy fitness equipment during the enthusiastic stage. This could easily result in buying something much more expensive and sophisticated than we need.

Hence our heads-up: take as much a realistic view of your goals as possible. Try to answer the following questions – but not alone. Have with you someone who knows you well, both you as a person and your daily program. Ask yourself:

  • How often will you use the exercise bike within the week?
  • For how long?
  • How hard do you intend to push yourself?
  • Check out the features of the exercise bike that caught your attention. How many of them will you use? How many of them contain terms or phrases that seem incomprehensible or difficult to grasp? Many manufacturers use difficult or scientific jargon to impress the reader, when, in reality, it describes ordinary or standard equipment. In addition, the less you understand a feature of the exercise bike, the less possible it is to use it.

Now that you have answered these questions, take them down a notch! Now, you probably have a more accurate and realistic picture of your goals, you will be able to buy an exercise bike that suits your needs.

Step 2: Learn a Few Things about Exercise Bikes

The more well-known and popular is a piece of workout machinery, the more difficult it is for the manufacturers to offer it at an inflated price.

Long story short, most exercise bikes out there are what we would call “value-for-money” options: the pricier models are far more reliable, durable, with features that diversify the workout and make it more pleasant for the user, especially regarding smart technology features. They are also almost silent during operation, no matter the setting.

To the contrary, cheaper exercise bikes offer just the basic, including a configurable workout resistance and a couple of programming options. But their construction quality is inferior, along with their durability, whereas they produce far more noise. In addition, they suit the needs of a smaller range of human statures, especially regarding height and weight.

Mid-priced ones are obviously better-constructed, cater to the needs of users of all statures and make considerably less noise. Still, they are not silent and seldom do they have smart tech features. At most, you can expect a full range of pre-set workout programs.

Necessary Features

Regardless of the price range of an exercise bike. There are a few features that are absolutely necessary. While what can be considered “basic” or not is often a matter of debate, usually among professional or semi-professional athletes, most of them consider the following as a “must-have features”, whatever the price:

  • Several resistance levels.
  • Comfortable and adjustable seat. Some models offer the option of replacing the seat.
  • Measurements of time, distance, number of calories burned, speed and heart rate.
  • Wide pedals with strappings for improved safety.

In other words, comfort and safety have to be your priorities. An uncomfortable model will often turn into a mere decorative element in your house, while a less safe one can induce an injury.

Optional Features

Naturally, as you come up the price scale you should expect some advanced or at least extra features. Most pricier models indeed come with extra features – the important thing is to discern whether you actually need them or not.

Such features include:

  • water bottle holder. True, nothing fancy here, but it is very helpful, especially during lengthy workouts;
  • built-in acoustic sound systems, for playing music tracks during the workout;
  • built-in fans for cooling off and refreshing the user;
  • remote control cups
  • a magazine stand.

Step 2: Ascertain the Bike’s Maximum User Weight

This one does not need much explanation. Before anything else, make sure that the exercise bike you are interested in can sustain your weight or the weight of the heaviest person of the family.

Do not play with the limits on this one. Pick models that can sustain at least 45 pounds above your weight, to ensure stability, which is very important both for the efficiency and safety of your workout.

Step 3:  Check the Weight of the Bike

This factor too affects the stability of the exercise during the workout. The heavier the bike itself, the more stable it is.

On the other hand, excessive weight could damage some types of floorings, especially wooden ones. If that is not an issue in your house, make sure that the bike has wheels for easier transportation.

Step 4: Noise Level

Most people do not have a problem with sound during workouts, but still, a very loud machine can be distracting or irritating for other members of your family that are trying to work or rest. It can also be a problem if you like to listen to music or to TV program while exercising.

Bear in mind that, often, an excessive sound is indicative of inferior mechanics. The lower the sound, the smoother the friction – hence the bigger the life span of the bike or its primary systems.

Note that exercise bikes equipped with cooling fans are usually noisier, because of their air resistance mechanism, which is designed to intensify the breeze as you pedal harder.

Step 5: Safety

This is step is essential if you have small children and/ or pets in the house. Make sure that all the systems that could cause an injury, e.g. the flywheel and chain, are fully covered, not allowing even a tiny finger to reach their mechanism.

That’s it! If you’ve read these instructions carefully you know enough to make a wise choice and pick an exercise bike that will cater to your needs.
