Design & Features

Design, Fit & Comfort

What immediately stands out in GM6’s design is its futuristic, RGB colour and the dazzling LED lights at the side of the ear cups, creating a nice atmosphere for the gamer with lights closed. Next, you notice the practical decompressing belt, designed to make the headset more extensible. Included in the package is an extension lead, which is great for those using a game console from their armchair or sofa.

The whole structure both seems and proves concise and sturdy, despite its surprisingly light weight (less than 300 gr). The headset features a high-grade protein leather, affording soft texture and a rather comfortable feel, even after hours of playing. Earmuffs come with memory foam pads and a skin-friendly material that reduces heat sweat.

Compatibility

Compatible with all famed game consoles (PS 4, Xbox One etc.) as well as PCs, laptops and Macs, Beexcellent’s GM6 is highly compatible will both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Win 7/Win8/Win8.1/Win 10/XP.

Connection Type

Connectivity rests on the standard 3.5mm jack. Note that you will need an extra Microsoft adapter if you wish to use this headset with an old Xbox One console. Lights use a USB plug.

Microphone

GM6’s mic is adjustable, thus protected from violent moves from kids or excitable grown-ups, and rather flexible, allowing you to bend it to numerous angles.

Another handy feature is the IC noise reduction chip, designed to capture the gamer’s voice while eliminating background noise.

Sound Quality

The volume, which is also controlled by a handy wheel attached in the cord (along with an on/off switch), is more than decent, especially if you take into account its amazingly low price. The Stereo Surround Sound is also better than the one you would expect for so cheap a headset, incorporating a high precision 40mm magnetic neodymium driver that delivers great sensitivity, strong frequency sound and resonating.

Pros
  • Low price
  • Lightweight and very comfortable
  • Flexible microphone
  • Durable and sturdy for such a price
  • Decent sound quality
  • LED lights on the side
  • Extension lead included
Cons
  • At this price, none at all! Just note that if you use glasses, you will feel pressure on the frame

Our Opinion

Light, sturdily and, most importantly, cleverly constructed, Beexcellent’s GM6 is very comfortable, very durable and deliver a surprisingly good sound quality for a headset of this price range. The side LEDs also add to the whole experience.

2. Turtle Beach Recon 50X – The Affordable Choice

Introduction

Turtle Beach Recon 50X White Stereo Gaming Headset
View on Amazon

Turtle Beach is a brand well known to ardent gamers, considered by many as the top headset manufacturer for 2020. One of its most successful models is the economical but greatly featured Recon 50X, which is described as the best threat to the idea that a great gaming session requires expensive gear.

At a Glance

  • Brand: Turtle Beach
  • Compatibility: PS4, PC, Xbox One, Laptop, Mac
  • Connection Type: 3.5mm jack
  • Weight: 200 gr
  • Microphone: In-Line Boom Microphone
  • Wired
  • Type of Gaming Headset: Closed
  • Sound Quality: Stereo Surround Sound
  • Frequency response: 20-20,000 Hz
  • 40mm Drivers
  • Package Contains:
    Recon 50X White Gaming Headset
    Removable Mic
    Quick Start Guide

Design & Features

Design, Fit & Comfort

Featuring a pretty standard, unimpressive design yet sturdy, durable construction, Recon 50X comes with adjustable ear cups and headband, catering for all head sizes. It is not designed to be used with glasses though; if you do wear glasses, you will get some pressure on the frame.

The ear cups firmly hug the head, surrounding the ears instead of resting on top of them – a design that affords much greater comfort for long gaming sessions. Its small weight (no more than 200 gr) makes the headset even easier to use for several consecutive hours.

Compatibility

The compatibility will hardly be an issue. Recon 50X works fine with both Xbox One and PS4, as well as PCs, Mac, and any device with a 3.5mm jack slot.

Connection Type

As already mentioned, Recon 50X uses a 3.5mm jack. Note that if you wish to connect it with an Xbox 360, you will need a dedicated adapter.

Microphone

The in-line boom mic is detachable; it does not come out easily, but still with a little effort and caution you will detach it whenever you wish to watch a movie or eat something.

It also allows you to clearly hear your teammates during gaming sessions while delivering excellent overall sound quality, normally found in much more expensive headsets.

Sound Quality

Being a low-priced stereo surround sound headset, it is hardly expected to deliver the crisper highs and most thundering lows you ever heard, especially at maximum volume, but the sound quality will hardly disappoint you. In fact, it is surprisingly good for a headset of this price range.

Well-defined frequencies, minimum distortion, decent bass reproduction and a set of 40mm Neodymium speakers combine and deliver a sound quality far superior to most of its competitors.

Rest assured you will hear all the screams and door creaks, all gunshots and explosions, as well as enemies lurking behind you or zombies growling from a (virtual) distance, without anyone in the room understanding or listening to a thing – contrary to your teammates of course, if you use TeamSpeak or something similar.

Pros
  • Low price
  • Nicely designed ear cups, comfort and firm fit
  • Detachable mic
  • Decent sound quality for this price range
Cons
  • Nothing you wouldn’t expect for a headset of this price; in fact, cons-wise, much less!

Our Opinion

If you do not want to spend a lot of money but still crave a good, decent sound quality and prime comfort no matter the length of your gaming sessions, then Recon 50X is an excellent pick.

    5mm audio cable
    Micro USB charging cable
    Quick User Guide

Design & Features

Design, Fit & Comfort

Featuring a pretty straightforward design and nice matt black coating, ANC31 has an expandable headband and very large ear cups, surrounding the ear and making sure the gamer is not distracted by external sounds, nor other people in the room disturbed by sounds of explosions and gunshots.

Construction quality and durability is a certain plus with ANC31. Everything, from the padded headband and ear cups to the plastic surrounding the speakers, is designed to endure endless gaming, without slipping off your head. The rea cups are designed to rotate to us much as 90 degrees, ensuring unrivalled flexibility, optimised fit and maximum comfort.  Ardent gamers will also find the no lip-sync delay function very handy.

The headset comes complete with a zippered carrying case, a USB cable for charging, and an AUX audio cable. Working both wired and wirelessly, ANC31 can work for up to 28 hours of playback time before requiring a recharge – which is simply amazing. Note, though, that when you use the cable the volume control and built-in microphone for making calls is instantly disabled.

Compatibility & Connection Types

Compatibility in ANC031 is great and straightforward when wired with the standard 3.5mm audio cable. Now, in wireless mode, that uses a Bluetooth 4.1 connection, things get a bit more complicated. For example, to connect it with certain Game consoles like PS4 and Nintendo Switch, you will need an Avantree Leaf, which is not included in the package, but does a truly amazing job when connected. Unfortunately, there is no way to wirelessly connect it Xbox One.

Sound Quality

Noise-cancelling works fabulously in this headset, especially at low frequencies, while delivering high-fidelity stereo sound quality with fast stream low latency codec, which makes it ideal for TV or PC Gaming.

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
  • Enhanced flexibility
  • Great noise cancelling out of low frequencies
  • Wired and wireless mode of operation
  • Come with a carrying case
Cons
  • Wireless mode does not work in Xbox One

Our Opinion

Ensuring a much superior sound quality and noise-cancelling and combining wireless and wired technology, ANC31 is justifiably considered by many as the best choice for this price range.

    Mobile 3.5mm Cable
    USB Cable
    Mic Port Cover
    Travel Case

Design & Features

Design, Fit & Comfort

Opting for a gloomy-looking black colour, with nothing more than a silver wordmark printed in the headband as a hint of colour, the LS35X comes padded to all points resting upon the head for added comfort, while the headband is designed to slide back and forth for optimised fit.

Connecting the headband to the ear cups, a swivel connector and the metal ear cup frame and faux-leather pads are cleverly designed to afford maximum comfort no matter the time you devote in gaming. The frame also has a number of function buttons on the rotatable outer ring, controlling various functions, such as mute mode, volume control and game/chat balance.

Under the left ear cup, there is an LED light, the power button, a Micro-USB port, the 3.5mm input jack and the microphone port. Under the right one, there is just the Xbox Wireless button.

A nice touch was the breathable cloth liner and the glass-friendly design on both sides that alleviates the pressure on the frame in case you wear glasses – one of the few headsets that show consideration for people preferring glasses to contact lenses. Note that the earpads can easily be replaced in case they wear out.

The headset comes with each own carrying pouch, protecting your gaming headset from dust and scratches when you travel around with it.

Compatibility, Connection Type & Battery Life

As already mentioned, LS35X is an officially licensed wireless Xbox gaming headset, so everything is designed to make the connection and synchronisation with this particular game console as easy as it gets.

The moment you pair it with the console, the headset will automatically re-connect with your Xbox One once you have activated them; just make sure the console is already on.

The LS35X will also work great with a Windows 10 PC, provided it has a built-in Xbox Wireless, or there is an Xbox Wireless USB dongle. You can also use the LS35X for PC, laptops and other mobile devices using the included 3.5mm audio cable.

LucidSound claim of around 15 hours of battery life proved accurate, provided the volume is set around 50-60%. Recharging takes a couple of hours, but the good news is that you can use them during recharging.

Microphone

LS35X comes with dual mic technology. The detachable boom microphone is nicely positioned within the player’s peripheral vision; save the red light when muted, which is a bit distracting, the mic is nice and flexible, featuring advanced noise cancellation during online play and background noise during chats. For mobile use, just remove the boom mic and use the integrated mic.

A great addition is the enable/disable mic monitoring option.

Sound Quality

The 50-mm speaker, equipped with hi-tech neodymium magnets deliver deep bass and clear highs – as well as an overall fantastic audio experience, be it for gaming, movies or music.

you can choose between stereo or two surround modes (Windows Sonic for Headphones or Dolby Atmos forheadphones, which requires a software download).

Pros
  • Great design, very comfortable
  • Fantastic Xbox One wireless connectivity, but it can also be used with PC and mobile
  • Excellent sound quality
  • Great battery life
  • It can also be used wired
Cons
  • Mic mute light can be distracting for some

Our Opinion

The LucidSound LS35X is by far the best option for Xbox One fans, with its unrivalled wireless connectivity, instant pairing, slick design and exceptional sound.

7. ASUS ROG Strix Fusion 700 (7.1 Surround) – The Audio Psycho’s Choice

Introduction

ASUS ROG Strix Fusion 700
View on Amazon

If you feel you just can’t be at the top of your game if the sound quality is anything less than perfect, then the Asus Strix 7.1 is the answer to your troubles. Asus Strix 7.1 is a multi-channel gaming headset with 5 drivers in each earpiece, delivering a genuine, unadulterated 7.1 surround sound. And that’s hardly its sole winning trait.

The Asus ROG Strix Fusion 700 is a high-end gaming headset from Asus’ Republic of Gamers brand. This is a brand that’s proved time and again that it understands what gamers want and need, so we have high hopes for these cans.

The Strix Fusion 700 is primarily designed to be wired up to a PC, PlayStation 4 or Nintendo Switch via USB for immersive gaming. It also has built-in Bluetooth 4.2, which means you can use it wirelessly with any device that supports it, including smartphones.

    Foldable Ear Cups
  • Package Contains:
    Headset
    USB Cable
    Quick Start Guide
    HDMI-to-3.5mm Speaker Splitter Cable

Design & Features

Design, Fit & Comfort

You can hardly find anything look prettier than the Asus ROG Strix Fusion 700. Premium design, without the usual teenage brass-band, and that is why you can easily use it for non-gaming applications, too, in public, without attracting the wrong kind of attention.

Design-wise, note that the cups are extendable, and the LED lighting controlled by Asus’ Aura Sync RGB software is just perfect, generating a nice and pleasant effect. Still, if you don’t like it, you can easily turn it off.

Lightweight and comfortable to wear, mainly thanks to the adjustable band, it comes with a second set of ear cushions, ensuring a perfect fit and many hours of pleasant gaming.

The mic is just by the left-hand can – just pull it down to activate it. From the pair of buttons on the back of this can, one is for activating the 7.1 surround sound effect, and the other for toggling Bluetooth. The first one is a really cool feature, saving you time and effort.

Equally great is the touch-sensitive plate over the left-hand can, enabling you to play, pause or skip music tracks, adjust volume, and synchronize the RGB lighting just by touching it. At first, it may be hard to figure it out, but when you do you will enjoy its use. Note though that it is very sensitive and responsive to touch, so you may accidentally play music or choose tracks without knowing it.

Connectivity

While compatibility won’t be an issue (it will connect with a PC, PS4 or Switch via a USB cable), there is no audio jack, thus limiting the devices you can connect it to, including Xbox One.

On the other hand, you get excellent Bluetooth technology, allowing easy connection with all your mobile devices and numerous game consoles.

Battery

You can use it both wired and wirelessly, and its built-in 900mAh battery is indeed great: it will keep you going for at least eight hours with the RGB lighting feature, and double that without it. A recharge takes around three hours.

Audio Performance

For that price, we would expect excellent audio quality – and indeed Asus did not let us down.

Featuring an airtight chamber that creates a large area around the drivers for clearer and more natural-sounding audio, the Asus ROG Strix Fusion 700 carries drivers that deliver a frequency response of 20-40kHz, which is impressively wide and provides strong bass and surprisingly crisp and clear details.

Generally, especially during gaming sessions, the Asus ROG Strix Fusion 700 is jest great at atmospherics, bringing out sounds that would be otherwise lost, such as footsteps, hissing sounds of arrows missing their target and falling bullet casings.

The digital to analogue converter ESS 9018 DAC is a great addition too, offering Hi-Res lossless music playback at 24-bit/96kHz, along with the built-in ESS 9601 amplifier.

Now a few words about the 7.1 virtual surround sound mode, which is a prominent feature in this set.

While, in our opinion, nothing can be compared with a physical surround sound system, the Asus ROG Strix Fusion 700 delivered a pretty convincing performance, hinting the gamer the direction and distance of a certain sound – not to a great degree, but still, it makes a difference. It also makes atmospherics all the more impressive.

Still, it needs further improvement in order to provide the gamer with a clear advantage against his opponents.

Pros
  • Exceptional sound quality
  • Elegant design
  • Wireless and Wired
  • Compatible with PC, PS4 and Nintendo Switch
Cons
  • No audio jack
  • 1 Surround can be further improved

Our Opinion

Excellent audio performance, great design, fantastic connectivity (especially via the Bluetooth technology), the Asus ROG Strix Fusion 700 is one of the best gaming headsets available at the market today – and, obviously, that comes at a price.

Gaming Headset Buyer’s Guide

Why Should I Buy a Gaming Headset?

Let’s be honest, proper gaming is out of the question without a high-quality gaming headset, be it for an addicted non-stop gamer or a casual one. A well-designed and amply featured headset adds realism, keeps the mind focused and maximises the thrill of the whole gaming experience.

What Gaming Headset should I buy?

That depends on your needs, wants, and budget. Headsets come in such a great feature variety and price range that is impossible to simply say “this is the best for you.” Still, your research can break down to some simple steps and become much easier.

The first step is to specify your budget. Ask yourself, “How much money am I willing to spend on my new headset?” Your chosen price range will immediately limit down your options. Then, check out the following key characteristics, and compare them to your needs and wishes. Soon, you will end up with no more than two or three gaming headsets, and picking the one that suits you best will be easy.

  • Compatibility

First, make sure you pick a headset compatible with the gaming platforms you use. Most headsets are PC compatible, but if you use consoles, like PS4 and Xbox One, or an Apple device, you need to make sure your headset’s compatibility.

Will any Gaming Headset Work with PS4?

No, it won’t, so you must make sure to check the specs and verify its compatibility, especially if you plan to use a wireless headset. Do not take anything for granted, neither trust generic statements such as “Compatible with All Gaming Consoles.” Make sure that the manufacturer states specifically that this particular model is PS4 compatible.

  • Connection Type

Next, consider the headset’s connection type. There are several types: the standard 3.5mm, the dual 3.5mm, a wired USB, wireless USB, and Bluetooth. PC gamers have the biggest troubles here since most PC headsets require the installation of some kind of software. If you use an older Xbox device, you might also need to get a Microsoft 3.5 mm headset adapter.

  • Weight, Fit & Comfort

No matter how great its sound features and overall performance, your headset must remain firmly attached to your head for many hours without causing discomfort.

The materials used for the headband and ear cups are of great importance. Leather ear cups are by far the top option in terms of style and durability, but they cause a lot of sweating. Ear cups from breathable material are less stylish but allow better airflow. The cheaper among them though may not feel as comfortable after the first couple of hours. Check for padded headbands too.

It is not easy to combine durability, prime construction, firm positioning and comfort – especially if you are on a certain budget. The best way to make sure the headset that caught your attention features these traits is to read buyer’s feedback.

The weight is very important too. If you wear glasses, check whether the manufacturer mentions any glass-friendly technology in the headset’s description. Some of them are designed to reduce tension or pressure on the frames.

  • Microphone

Obviously, the microphone’s specs play a great role in the headset’s performance, allowing to communicate with fellow-players.

Built-in microphones are pretty handy, especially if they come with a decent noise cancellation feature, allowing you to clearly hear your voice when you speak during the game. Detachable mics are best suited for gamers who love to listen to music or movies while gaming.

Baer also in mind that most gaming headsets come with omnidirectional, picking sounds from all directions, or unidirectional boom mics. Most gamers agree that the unidirectional ones perform better.

  • Wired/ Wireless Technology

Both technologies come with their pros and cons. Wired headsets are constantly tangled and easily spill cups of coffee all over your keyboard, but have no issues with interferences from routers and other wireless devices, neither need batteries. Wireless connectivity is getting better day by day, but you always run the risk of having your headset running out of energy in the middle of a gaming session.

  • Open and Closed Gaming Headsets

Closed headsets come with a cup around the speaker, isolating your ears from ambient sounds and allowing the user to focus on the game and not get distracted, as well as catching even the slightest game noise – which is always a good thing, especially if you play against other players too.

Open headsets, on the other hand, feature perforated ear cups, allowing you to communicate with your surroundings and delivering a less muffled sound. If you opt for an open headset, check if the mic gets sounds from the ear speaker.

  • Sound Quality

Modern gaming relies heavily on sound to maximise the thrills and give the advantage to the most vigilant player. Needless to say, sound quality is closely connected with the headset’s price. It is next to impossible to get prime quality sound with a cheap headset.

Surround sound allows you to spot the virtual direction and angle of the sound, with the Dolby Headphone Technology currently being best possible technology for gaming headsets.

The stereo game sound is pretty decent too, but of inferior quality. Generally speaking, headsets with 5.1 or 7.1 virtual surround sound are the best picks, especially for FPS, who also require a powerful bass.

As to the simulated surround sound, it is a great addition, but you can do great without it.

Can a Gaming Headset Cause Hearing Loss?

If we wish to be accurate, no, it can’t. It is improper use by the owner that can cause hearing problems or even hearing loss. That’s why all manufacturers include specific and articulate warnings about incorrect use of the headset in the manual, both to alert the user and avoid legal action against them.

Can Gaming Headsets Be Used for Music?

Of course, but there are a few things you should keep in mind. A gaming headset is primarily designed to help the user perform as best as possible during the game. This practically means that sound clarity is not its first priority, while the bass is boosted, distorting the spectrum balance and causing an effect known as bass bleed. Top priorities will always the surround sound quality and positioning, helping the gamer win the advantage against its virtual opponents. These features do not always afford the optimum audio track quality.

So, yes, you will be able to enjoy your music with a gaming headset, but they are not designed to reproduce all sounds as intended by the artist and studio recorder. Naturally, certain gaming headsets reproduce audio tracks better than others, so, if you plan to enjoy your music as often as your gaming, check the specifications and reviews for music track optimisation.

  • Price

A mere glance at the Amazon and you will instantly see that the price range for gaming headsets is huge. In most cases, prices are pretty indicative of the headset’s sound quality, but not necessarily of its comfort.

Most gamers say that you need to give at least £30.00 for a decent quality headset, but that’s only true for hard-core gamers. If you enjoy casual gaming, you can find even cheaper ones that will meet your needs, just make sure they are comfortable. For serious or even competitive or semi-professional gaming, you must move to a much more expensive pick.
