Design & Features

Wireless and with excellent Wi-Fi connectivity (2.4GHz), PYBBO’s video doorbell features an HD 1080-pixel picture, given at a 166° wide-angle. This combination offers an excellent view of your front porch, even during the night, through your smart mobile device and a dedicated app, whenever and wherever you may be.

Needless to say, it has built-in mic and speakers, allowing two-way communication through your mobile device.

The app, though, is the biggest issue with this model. The doorbell itself is well constructed and truly delivers, but the app requires a serious upgrade from the manufacturer that would simplify its use, especially pairing to more than one phones, allowing more or all family members easy access and control.

Equipped with a smart PIR motion detector, it activates and alerts you every time someone approaches your door – which means you will not miss out visitors even when you are away from home. If you have issues with pets or plants that may activate the motion sensor too often, you can adjust the sensitivity.

Power-wise, you have two options. You can keep it permanently connected to an AC, without worrying about draining out of energy or use the pair of batteries provided for a fully cable-free connection. Note, though, that power consumption is very low, and that both batteries are rechargeable and can last, with a single charge and moderate use, for 12-24 weeks.

As to video recordings, the device comes with a 16G memory card, but it can support a 128G memory. All recordings are saved and stored for 30 days, with loop recording erasing day-by-day old footage and replacing it with new. In addition to that, you can capture snapshots or video clips and save them in another device or card.

Pros
  • Nice price
  • Value for money
  • Loop recording
  • Wireless
Cons
  • Poor app
  • Difficult (not impossible) to pair to more than one phones

Our Opinion

If the app was just a bit user-friendlier, PYBBO’s video doorbell would easily dwarf competition at its price range.

2. Victure Smart Video Doorbell

Introduction

Another budget-friendly option, Victure’s video doorbell offers excellent image quality, it is easy to install, and records everything that happens in front of your door, allowing you to check it wherever you may be, whenever you wish to do so.

At a Glance

  • Wireless Camera, Wi-Fi Connected (2.4GHz Wi-Fi)
  • 1080P HD
  • Motion Detection
  • Two-way Talk
  • Wide Angle
  • Local Storage
  • IP65 weatherproof for Home Security

Design & Features

Victure’s video doorbell takes it up a notch. It is equally affordable, easy to install and use, and comes with a user-friendly app.

With an installation that can barely take 10 to 15 minutes, the set-up is a breeze. Wireless Chime could be a little louder, but it generally performs great. Two-way communication is impeccable, with the downloadable app being easy both to pair and use. If you want to pair with other devices, bear in mind that you will have to create separate accounts.

Photos and video are shot from a 1080-pixel wide-angle, that performs equally good both during the night and day, especially is it protected from direct exposure to the sun.

Motion detection is decent, but not great, and it is probably the only aspect of the whole device that seems to suffer. Still, something should explain the low price – and none of the other features of the doorbell seem to have any issues. The problem is that it is far too sensitive, and can be triggered by a passer-by or even a car, depending on this position. Unfortunately, there is no way to adjust its sensitivity, contrary to our previous model. This can get really annoying, with constant alerts to your mobile device for nonsense. The only way to tackle this issue is by repositioning the doorbell.

Recording, on the other hand, is excellent. Just install the 32Gb Micro SD card and leave to the motion detector to decide when there is something important enough to record, or you can also record at will yourself. Bear in mind that you have a 7-day free cloud storage, but you have to pay for more. of course, you can always stick to SD card storage.

As to battery life, it lasts around 8 weeks, but of course, that depends on the use. Id the motion detector was just a bit less sensitive, it would be great. You could connect it to an AC for constant power, but you will have to buy that separately.

Pros
  • Great, audio picture and video quality
  • Allows you to leave a voicemail to the visitor
  • The app is very responsive and it can be easily used by more than users
  • Excellent price
Cons
  • Not compatible with Alexa or Google home
  • Wireless chime could be a bit louder

Our Opinion

Amazingly efficient for its price, the Victure Doorbell could be an undisputable leader if it weren’t for some minor shortcomings.

3. Ring Video Doorbell (1st Gen)

Introduction

Ring, recently purchased by Amazon, is probably the best known and certainly one of the most reliable brands when it comes to video doorbells. As you will see, we have included several of their models in our list. This one is neither the cheapest of the range, not the pricier, but it surely is an excellent pick.

At a Glance

  • Installation: Install it yourself with included accessories.
  • Setup Requirements if hardwiring: Standard doorbell system with 8-24 VAC, 40VA max, 50/60Hz doorbell transformer
  • Video: 720p HD Video, Live View and night vision

  • Motion Detection: Advanced Motion Detection with adjustable motion zones
  • Audio: Two-way communication with noise cancellation

  • Internet Requirements: Requires a minimum upload speed of 500 kbps, but 1 Mbps is recommended for optimal performance
  • Connectivity: 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi connection @ 2.4 GHz
  • Operating Conditions: -20°C to 50°C, weather-resistant
  • Available Colours: Satin Nickel, Venetian Bronze
  • Dimensions: 12.65 x 6.17 x 2.21 cm
  • Included in the Box:
    Ring Video Doorbell
    Mounting Bracket
Diode (For Use with Electronic Doorbells)
    Installation Tools and Screws
    USB Charging Cable
    User Manual
    Security Sticker
Warranty and Service: 1-year limited warranty and service included

Design & Features

The 1st generation Ring Video Doorbell is a bit bulkier than some of the more advanced models of its range, but its looks and overall design will surely add grace and elegance to your front door. The casing may seem flimsy, but it is actually a highly reliable device, with few complaints about design flaws or lack of durability.

The setup is simple; just follow the instructions and in less than 15 minutes the doorbell will be set and ready. Note that this particular model can be used wirelessly, connected via Wi-Fi and powered by its battery, or to the building’s circuit.

Download and install the app, create a personal account and pair one or more smart devices with the doorbell. When rung, the doorbell notifies you and allows you to communicate with the visitor through the app, which is easy and simple to use, and rather intuitive I should say. For example, if you decide to ignore the call, the visitor will know nothing about it. Since Ring is owned by Amazon, all Ring doorbells are now compatible with the Echo Show and Echo Spot devices.

One issue with this model is that several seconds pass between the ringing of the doorbell and the app notification (around four); not enough to lose a visitor, but surely the response could be snappier, especially if you consider that, in most cases, you will have to unlock the phone and activate the camera.

Of course, this becomes a problem only when you are away from home, or in the garage or up in the attic. If you are inside the house, you will surely hear the chime.

Audio and video quality are good (720p for a 180-degree angle), even during the night – at least for a model of this price range. Besides, it is not a security camera system.

A great addition is the adjustability of the motion detector – which is not a given for all models, as we saw in our previous pick. You can set different zones within a distance of 30 feet, and not be needlessly bothered by cars and pedestrians, thus saving time, trouble and storage space.

As to recording, Ring offers cloud storage, allowing the user to keep a record of footage taken as far back as six months – provided you make a subscription.

Pros
  • Sleek design
  • Reliable
  • Easy to install and use
  • Excellent app
  • Affordable
Cons
  • Some time passes from the time the button is pressed and the notification of the app.

Our Opinion

Among the most popular of Ring’s video doorbells, this first-generation model offers efficiency, ease of use and a more than reasonable price.

4. Ring Door View Cam (renamed to Ring Peephole Cam)

Introduction

As mentioned in the subtitle, Ring’s Peephole Cam was up until recently known as Door View Cam and is an excellent wireless device for apartments, offices and all sorts of buildings that require improved entrance security.

At a Glance

  • Installation: Install it yourself with included accessories
  • Setup Requirement if hardwiring: Standard doorbell system with 8-24 VAC, 40VA max., 50/60 Hz doorbell transformer
  • Video: 1080p HD Video, Live View and Night Vision
  • Field of View: 155° horizontal – 90° vertical
  • Motion Detection: Advanced Motion Detection with adjustable motion zones
  • Audio: Two-way communication with noise cancellation
  • Available Colours: Satin Nickel
  • Power: Powered by the removable battery pack
  • Internet Requirements: Requires a minimum upload speed of 1 Mbps, but 2 Mbps is recommended for optimal performance
  • Operating Conditions:
  • Indoors: 0°C to 40°C
  • Outdoors: -20.5°C to 48.5 °C
  • Weather-resistant
  • Connectivity: 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi connection @ 2.4 GHz
  • Dimensions:
    Outdoors: 9.73 cm x 4.70 x 1.93 cm
    Indoors: 12.2 x 5.74 x 2.95 cm
  • Compatibility
  • Door thickness: 34-55 mm
  • Door Peephole Diameter: 12–14 mm
  • Included in the Box:
Ring Door View Cam (including one rechargeable battery pack)
    Installation tools and hardware
    Spare connector cable
    User manual and security sticker
Warranty: 1-year limited warranty and service

Design & Features

Featuring a truly wonderful design, the Ring Peephole Cam comes with two lenses, enabling you to use it as a standard peephole, without revealing your presence though.

Installation is always easy with Ring’s models: you just replace the existing peephole mechanism with this little wonder, by putting the front of the Peephole Cam on the door and the back part of the camera into the corresponding position, screw the clip, connect the cable and put the battery in place; and that’s it. Believe, it sounds much more complicated than it actually is.

Then, of course, you have to download the app and create an account. You can easily pair the device to more than one phones or tablets. The app itself, as already mentioned in the previous model, is easy to use and very intuitive. It even allows you to activate a two-factor authentication for improved security. A great advantage is that it is compatible with Alexa – but not with Google Assistant.

Equipped with a pretty large 6,000-mAh rechargeable battery, the doorbell will work properly (with moderate use of around 10 rings per day) for more than a month. The motion detector can also be adjusted to be as sensitive as it suits your needs, thus prolonging the battery’s life. Still, replacing and recharging every month may seem a chore to some.

Video quality is considerably better than the previous Ring model, with an HD resolution of 1080p, while during the night, an infrared emitter ensures equally good pictures. Note, though, that it will not work properly if installed in storm doors, for the infrared light will reflect off the storm door and blind the camera. The video quality will not be top-notch.

Video recording is an issue, though, since you can only save footage with a cloud storage plan, with a monthly cost of £2 – £8.

Pros
  • A sophisticated peephole
  • Fantastic app, easy to use and intuitive
  • Alexa compatible
  • Excellent HD video quality
Cons
  • Monthly recharging
  • Local footage storage not possible
  • Not compatible with Google Assistant

Our Opinion

Easy to install and use, Ring’s sophisticated peephole comes at an affordable price, with an array of great features and an excellent app. if it had a longer battery life and allowed local video storage it would be an unsurpassed pick.

5. Ring Video Doorbell 3Value-for-Money

Introduction

Ring Video Doorbell 3 is a bit pricier, but has a cooler design, better video quality, and works with 5G Wi-Fi, making it much more responsive and faster.

View on Amazon

At a Glance

  • Installation: Install it yourself with included accessories

  • Audio: Two-way audio with noise cancellation
  • Power: Runs on a rechargeable Quick-Release Battery Pack (included). Can be hardwired to an existing doorbell system or transformer for continuous charging (8–24 VAC, 40 VA max., 50/60 Hz). No halogen or garden-lighting transformers; no DC transformer/power supply.
  • Internet Requirements: Recommended minimum upload speed of 2 Mbps per device
  • Connectivity: 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi connection. Dual-band at 2.4 GHz or 5.0 GHz.
  • Operating Conditions: Suitable for temperatures -20°C to 48°C, Water Resistant
  • Available Colours: Satin Nickel, Venetian Bronze (all colours included)
  • Dimensions: 12.8 x 6.2 x 2.8 cm
  • Included in the Box:
    Ring Video Doorbell 3
    Rechargeable Battery Pack
Satin Nickel and Venetian Bronze Faceplates
    Wedge and Corner Kits
    USB Charging Cable
    Installation Tools and Hardware
    User Manual
    Security Stickers
    Warranty and Service
    1-year limited warranty and service

Design & Features

As with all previous models, the Ring Video Doorbell 3 is a breeze to set up. You can either install it wirelessly or wired, depending on your needs and preferences. It has no effect at all to the functionality of the device, but the second choice rids you of the monthly replacing and recharging of the better. A nice addition to the wireless operation is that the device sends an email to remind you that the battery is low.

Using the same app, which, as we said, is excellent, easy to use and intuitive, you can communicate with your visitors, ignore door knocks and easily check out who is coming to your door.

The angle of the video is a bit wider (160° horizontal, 84° Vertical), which is good, and the quality of the picture great, regardless of the time of the day. Motion detecting sensitivity can be adjusted to the peculiarities of your neighbourhood, and you can also connect the device to Alexa (but not to Google Assistant) for even easier control: just say it and your smartphone will instantly open up the app and allow to check the video footage of your front-porch.

A nice upgrade of this model is that it works with 5G Wi-Fi, which means that the doorbell responds and notifies you a lot faster of a doorbell ring or an upcoming visit.

Video recording, is possible with cloud storage, which involves a subscription. Personally, I would love a local storage option.

Pros
  • Great app, easy to use and intuitive
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi
  • Sophisticated motion detection
  • Alexa compatible
  • Excellent HD video quality
  • It can be sued both wired and wirelessly
Cons
  • Monthly recharging (if you opt for wireless use)
  • Local footage storage not possible
  • Not compatible with Google Assistant

Our Opinion

More responsive and offering a wider angle and better video footage, the Ring Doorbell 3 can indeed justify its pricier tag.

6. Ring Video Doorbell Pro – The Best Choice

Introduction

With the Video Doorbell Pro justifies its price by promising even better audio and video quality, longer battery life, and compatibility with other smart devices through IFTTT.

    Security Sticker
Warranty and Service: 1-year limited warranty and service included

Design & Features

The Pro model has pretty much the same dimensions with the cheaper models, but looks slimmer and is much more stylish. It comes with four different front casings to ensure a perfect much with the style of its exterior. A nice addition is the ring of LEDs around the doorbell button that glows blue when pressed.

Set up is, once more, very easy. You can connect it to the wiring of your building or use it wirelessly. The good thing about this model is that its battery lasts longer than the cheaper models of its range – at least two weeks longer (with moderate use).

We have already said enough about the app in our comments about the comments for our previous Ring models: a breeze to use and navigate, it allows you to pair it with Alexa and works with 5G Wi-Fi, affording much faster response and smaller lag time between the doorbell ringing and the alert in your smart device.

The Ring Pro captures video at 1080p at a 160o angle – which is more than enough for a clear view of your front door. Night vision is actually better than cheaper models: musing no less than three infrared LEDs, it gives you a 30-feet wide night vision.

Video recording, once again, is possible only with Cloud storage, which requires a subscription. Despite being a bit disappointing that there is no option for local storage through a memory card, it is true that a cloud subscription is hassle-free and ensures a much better video recording archive.

Note that the app has a Neighbourhood button, a feature that enables you to share footage with neighbours who also have the Ring app and have joined the Neighbourhood! It is a great capability in areas where relatives or people of the same neighbourhood feel threatened and wish to improve the security of the area by working together.

Through the app you can access the history of all recorded events, allowing you to share, delete, or keep and edit it. You can also configure the zones and the sensitivity of the motion detector. There is also a Motion Snooze button, enabling you to disable motion alerts for a short period of time (from 15 to 120 hours).

Now, the IFTTT compatibility allows you to connect the app with other smart devices, like Smart Switches (for front-porch lighting).

Last, the Ring+ option allows you to link the app to Ring’s partners, like Wink, Kevo, LockState, and Wemo. Once linked, you can access a partner app from within the Ring app.

Pros
  • Easy to install
  • Nice finish
  • Great audio and visual quality
  • Works with 5G Wi-Fi
  • Compatible with Alexa and IFTTT
  • Neighbourhood sharing for improved collective security
Cons
  • Not exactly budget-friendly
  • No storage cloud

Our Opinion

The Ring Video Doorbell Pro has pretty much anything one can possibly expect from an advanced video doorbell – at a reasonable, yet not budget-friendly price.

7. Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus

Introduction

We close our list with what is considered the flagship of the Ring Video doorbells range. It pretty much amasses all the traits and features of the cheaper models, while offering an amazing pre-roll feature.

View on Amazon

At a Glance

  • Installation: Self-install with included accessories
  • Setup Requirement if hardwiring: Standard doorbell system with 8-24 VAC, 40VA max., 50/60 Hz doorbell transformer

  • Night vision is not included with Pre-Roll
  • Field of View: 160° horizontal, 84° vertical

  • Connectivity: 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi connection. Dual-band at 2.4 GHz or 5.0 GHz
  • Operating Conditions: Suitable for temperatures -20°C to 48°C, Water Resistant
  • Available Colours: Satin Nickel, Venetian Bronze (all colours included)
  • Dimensions: 12.8 x 6.2 x 2.8 cm
  • Included in the Box:
    Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus

Satin Nickel and Venetian Bronze Faceplates
    Wedge and Corner Kits
    USB Charging Cable
    Installation Tools and Hardware
    User Manual
    Security Stickers
Warranty and Service: 1-year limited warranty and service provided by the manufacture

Design & Features

When first launched, the Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus featured the best motion detection of the range, which is now incorporated to the Pro model too.

You can easily adjust the sensitivity by extending or reducing the motion detection zone within the camera’s field of view, as well as create three zones of decreasing sensitivity as distant yourself from your door.  The last thing you want is a motion alert every time a leaf is rustled by the wind.

But that feature is found in the cheaper models too. The innovation introduced in the new model is the capability of creating a fourth zone, closer to the door (5-15 feet of the doorbell), and of four “privacy areas”, where there is no monitoring and video recording. This may seem trivial, but it actually can save you from a lot of trouble if you have a cranky neighbour who is over-sensitive with being watched by surveillance equipment.

Another nice addition is the “People Only” mode, which activates the video recording and possible alerting only when people are detected near the front porch – amazing feature in neighbourhoods with a lot of pets.

Next, you have the pre-roll feature, which was designed to improve security and offer you better footage in cases of intruders. Basically what it does is to save and add to a recorded event the four seconds the preceded it: for example, if someone tried to storm your door at 00:01:25, the recorded video will include footage from 00:01:21, allowing you to see crucial information that may help you or the police in detecting the intruder.

The pre-roll video can also be seen in the camera’s app, in the top left corner of the live view, within a separate window that can be, with a simple tap, move to full screen.

The video quality is great – for a video doorbell footage of course. Still, for its price, I personally would expect something better.

On the other hand, the delay usually seen when the doorbell alerts the Ring app is considerably smaller than cheaper models – but not absent. If you have connectivity issues, you can always buy the range-extending Ring Chime Pro, which is designed to ensure that Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus will reach your router.

Needless to say that features found in cheaper Ring models, like two-way communication, Alexa, Ring Alarm, Amazon Echo, and Google Assistant compatibility are a given. And this is actually the main issue with this model: the most useful of its features can actually be found in cheaper models. This does not mean though that its additions do not justify the higher price. I am just not sure whether they are actually so necessary – at least for most people.

Pros
  • Great video and audio quality
  • Great motion detection
  • Compatible with Alexa, Ring Alarm, Amazon Echo, and other smart devices
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi
  • Pre-roll feature
Cons
  • Its most useful features can be found in cheaper models
  • For this price, the video quality could be even better

Our Opinion

How does a video doorbell work?

Most video doorbells are connected nowadays to the houses doorbell wiring or Wi-Fi wiring. If the building has an audible alter system, they can be integrated into that too.

When it comes to notifying the owner, a video doorbell pretty much works like an ordinary doorbell, chiming when triggered by the visitor. On the other hand, some more advanced video doorbells now function also a small security camera: activated by a motion detector, they start recording upon sensing someone approaching your front door. Getting a clear view of a possible intruder or other strangers can be really helpful in cases of attempted burglary or vandalising. Cheaper models activate the video recording when the doorbell is ringed.

This video recording capability can be set to send an alert or notification to one of your smart devices and notify you that someone has approached your house. Some even have a dedicated mobile app for easier use. They also provide live video feeding.

When it comes to mics and audio system, obviously the video doorbell allows you to speak to the visitor before deciding whether you will open the door or not, but the smart-packed models enable you to do that even through the mobile device.

Video doorbells greatly upgrade the security of your house or office, affording you much better control of what happens in your front door and making you feel safer and more relaxed in your personal space.
