When purchasing a carpet cleaner, there are certain things you should take into consideration. For example, how much you are willing to spend, what you need the cleaner for, i.e. the size of your home or office.
If the carpet cleaner is required for the office, naturally it will be more frequently in use, and you may need a heavy-duty model.
You should also consider how much noise it makes and how much it weighs and whether it is easy to use.
We hope you will find our guide useful in finding the very best carpet cleaner for your purposes.
1. Bissell StainPro 10 – An Excellent Carpet Cleaner
The Bissell StainPro 10 is an excellent carpet cleaner, which gives exceptional results. It boasts dual rotating brushes, easy to clean floorhead and it has very powerful suction which leaves carpets almost dry after cleaning. The cleaner has large volume tanks which makes it ideal for homes with large rooms.
The tank-in-tank design is fairly unusual and actually makes it a bit difficult to fill, empty and to estimate clean fluid levels. Aside from this small complaint, it is still a really great all-around carpet cleaner.
The flexible hose is permanently attached and when not in use, simply wind it around the back hanger in its clip holder. A standard brush/vacuum utensil is supplied for upholstery. There is a tool for crevices in those hard to reach areas.
The double tank makes it hard to see the remaining level of the clean solution when the dirty water level rises. Also, when emptying waste, the clean solution tends to flow out with the dirty water. You need to assess how much fluid needed in the beginning. The single fluff-filter requires a quick wipe over whenever you fill the tank.

Design & Features
Bissell’s StainPro 10 is a carpet and upholstery deep cleaner. It is a full-size carpet shampooer with an 800W motor and onboard stain utensil. The main floorhead has twin brush bars with 10 rows of bristles plus it boasts heated cleaning. The water tank holds almost 5 litres.
The two roller brushes fit onto a floating carrier and have medium-stiff bristles which agitate the carpet fibres. There are also small, fixed brushes on the sides which enable cleaning up to the skirting edges. The action is spray forward, clean/vacuum on the backstroke and the cleaning path is nice and wide at just over 30 cm.
The StainPro 10 is quite hefty at 11 Kg dry and 16 Kg fully loaded with clean water. However, both the motor and tanks are located low down on the floorhead, instead of attached to the body of the cleaner, and this makes it feel much lighter. The back wheels make for easy rolling on the carpet as well, so it is easy to handle.
Initial set-up requires two screwdrivers, one to secure the handle and another for the upper cable/hose carrier. The screws are Phillips No2 and No1. The upper carrier needs a little gentle persuasion with something heavy to clip into place.
Nothing folds up for storage, but the StainPro 10 houses its cable, hose and spot-cleaning tool onboard. The cable is 9M long with plenty of reach from the 2.5 M hose which facilitates cleaning larger areas or up staircases.
The tank within a tank is unique as it houses both clean and dirty water. There is a plastic bladder inside the tank which contains clean water and fluid mix. As you use the solution, the bladder deflates allowing more space for the dirty water. The only problem with this is that it is hard to judge how much cleaning fluid you have left.
Filling the tank isn’t that easy either as none of its ports is labelled but just check the manual for guidance.
Bissell offers a massive range of carpet cleaning fluids and included are two 236 ml sample bottles, Professional (standard detergent) and Deep Clean + Oxy which adds active oxygen technology to help stain removal. Both are mildly perfumed and work extremely well on really dirty carpets. If yours are only mildly dirty, use half the solution.
The StainPro 10’s hose is permanently attached to the body. When not in use it winds neatly around its rear hanger, resting in its clip. A standard brush/vacuum tool is supplied for stains and upholstery. There’s also a crevice tool to reach those hard to get at places.
The flexible (non-stretchy) hose makes it easier getting upstairs. The connection on the cleaner is low which means there is no danger of it falling over.
The StainPro 10 makes quite a bit of noise when operating. When the vacuum motor and brushes are working it measures about 84dB.
You also need quite a strong arm to move the machine around, but the low centre of gravity helps, as do the roller wheels. Actual weight in hand is light, and the low-down weight keeps the floorhead firmly in contact with the carpet.
The StainPro 10 heats the fluid and then puts it down across the cleaning width. The twin rollers work well, and the powerful vacuum sucks up most of the moisture in one return sweep. With the tank weight low down, the vacuum channel pushes into the carpet pile which improves water recovery. The Professional cleaning solution achieves exceptional carpet cleaning results.
Like all carpet cleaners, the twin brushes do pull up the odd loose carpet fibre, but this is in no way excessive.
Even stubborn red wine stains will be reduced with a few passes, and after a minute of cleaning, the stain should be completely removed but if not, just use the hose and hand tool to finish the job.
Excellent deep-cleaning and high performance in stain removal make the Stain Pro 10 well worth the money. We highly recommend this product.
2. Vax Dual Power Pro Advance – Outstanding Deep Cleaning
The Vax Dual Power Pro Advance boasts formidable dual wash and rinse action and has accessories for every carpet cleaning requirement. The powerful motor ensures that your carpet is dry after washing
and the dirty water is easy to empty out.
For difficult stains, there is a trigger release to spray detergent mix onto the spot and a front suction to vacuum up wastewater. A wand and hose are supplied for pre-treatment of really tough stains.
A large Vax cloth bag is supplied to keep all the tools and accessories, and the SpinScrub tool just clips onto the main handle.
Two 250 ml bottles of detergent and one 250 ml bottle of pre-treatment fluid are supplied with the cleaner.
The Vax cleaner is quite heavy and needs a little effort to move around when full of water and is quite slow but achieves excellent results.

The Dual PowerPro Advance is large and quite heavy even when empty. The large floorhead has both a full-width roller brush and a row of smaller brushes which rotate horizontally to the floor. The two sets of brushes make for a distinctive scrubbing pattern which creates a 360° cleaning.
The main handle, waste water bin and the twinned water and cleaning fluid container all clip conveniently together. Both clean and dirty water containers have large capacities which are enough to clean an average sized room. For a full wash and rinse clean, you may need to empty the waste and refill half-way around the room.
For really difficult stains and small spillages, there is a lengthy hose and the SpinScrub hand tool. This is like a mini version of the rotating brushes on the floorhead, with one brush that rotates under the power of the air-flow.
There is a trigger release which sprays water/detergent onto the stain and a front suction slot vacuums up the wastewater. It rotates slowly but stops altogether if pressed into the carpet.
There is another upholstery tool which although basic, is better for detail cleaning on carpets. It has a trigger spray release and a suction slot which scrubbing action provided by agitating the leading edge of the tool into the carpet manually.
A separate wand and hose are supplied for pre-treatment of extremely tough stains. It sprays a tight jet of the fluid and is ideal for spot cleaning.
A large cloth Vax-branded bag is provided to keep all the tools and accessories, except for the SpinScrub which has its own clip on the main handle.
If you are new to carpet cleaning, here are a few pointers: First, vacuum your carpet with your normal hoover to reduce surface dirt, hair and debris that may get caught on the scrubbing brushes. Next, spray any tough stains with a squirt of the pre-treatment fluid using the wand and hose.
Fill the machine with warm water and the detergent supplied. When operating, the Vax scrubs with its dual brushes and vacuums up liquid from the full-width front slot at the same time. When you move the Vax forward, squeeze the trigger on the handle, and it releases a full-width spray of water and detergent which the brushes scrub into the carpet.
At the end of the forward stroke, release the trigger and pull the cleaner slowly back towards you. This gives the carpet a second scrubbing; the vacuum slot at the front of the floorhead sucks up the dirty water. You can see the state of the water through the clear front panel and as it is deposited in the waste water container. For extremely dirty areas, you can increase the amount of detergent and water mix sprayed onto the floor using a boost switch that can be found on the handle. This gives the carpet a deeper soaking but consumes water and detergent at rather an alarming rate.
The method is much the same for using either of the smaller cleaning tools: Attach the long and flexible hose to the body of the cleaner, spray, scrub and vacuum up dirty water as you go.
The upholstery tool is better for serious carpet scrubbing, but the SpinScrub tool is excellent for upholstery.
The Dual PowerPro Advance works very well on the worst sort of stains like red wine, even without the pre-treatment. Although pretty noisy, the machine does the job quickly in just one forward-cleaning sweep and return stroke! It took out most of the stain, and that is pretty incredible.
Be sure that your cleaning strokes are done slower than vacuuming, to allow time for the scrubbing brushes to do the job properly. Also, the backstroke needs times to suck up the dirty water, so should be done slowly as well. If necessary repeat the process several times to get the best results. If a small stain still shows, clean manually until it has vanished.
The upholstery tool is just as successful; care needs to be used on fabrics, however.
You can use the SpinScrub tool on a leather sofa by just employing a light pressure; it will scrub the surface clean and needs only wiping with a cloth afterwards.
We can highly recommend this Vax machine but there are a few drawbacks: It is heavy and not easy to move around when full of water. It is quite slow and takes much longer than just hoovering the carpet. At least an hour and a half is required to clean the sofa properly.
Since cleaning the machine after use takes quite a bit of effort, it is worth tackling all your carpets in one day. All the containers and tools need rinsing and drying, and the main floorhead needs a good clean and de-fluff after use. Bear in mind also, that several screws need to be removed just to take out the brush bar. Having said all this, the results are definitely well worth the clean-up effort.
This Vax’s outstanding cleaning performance across carpets and upholstery make it an excellent buy and make up for any slowness – better to achieve a great result rather than a fast and sloppy one.
3. Vax 6131T 3-In-1 Multivax – A Budget Pick
The Vax 6131T is a basic carpet cleaner which hasn’t changed too much since the original design in 1989. This is probably because it does the job well and didn’t need much modification.
The main difference is that this machine is a 3-in-1 cleaner which works not only as a standard vacuum cleaner but also for spills and as a full-on carpet cleaner.

The Vax 6131T uses a powerful 1300W electric motor which has intense suction power. Don’t expect rotating brushes on this machine; this has a completely different operation than other carpet cleaners.
You can put the motor unit in the middle of the room and clean the carpet by using the lightweight cleaning attachment instead of pushing the cleaner around the room. This is actually one of the lightest carpet cleaners at only 8 Kg.
It has a huge 8-litre dirty water storage tank which is twice that on more expensive models. The capacity of the clean water tank is 4 litres. It has a very long power cord of 10M which is useful in a large room.
Like most carpet cleaners, this one comes complete with various cleaning tool attachments. However, at this low price, you cannot expect powered hand tools.
Despite this fact, the Vax 6131T has a high cleaning performance, even without advanced technology, it relies on a powerful and solid motor to do the job.
You cannot go wrong on the performance and long life of this machine, and you certainly won’t find a lower price. It is a perfect choice for anyone wanting a basic carpet cleaner that does the job well.

Sturdily built and menacing looking, the Rug Doctor Deep Carpet Cleaner seems capable of scaring the dirt out of the carpet! Upon shedding a mere glance at the thing, and you instantly feel it will remain in your service for a lifetime indeed.
True enough, it weighs considerably more than most of our other picks (even when its tank is empty!), but its large, carpet-friendly wheels make it surprisingly manoeuvrable – as long as you don’t intend on moving it through stairs in different floors. Besides, its handle is adjustable and features a nice grip design. It can also be folded down for easier storage.
The Rug Doctor Deep Carpet Cleaner features an advanced rotating and vibrating brushing system, designed to take your carpet cleaning to pro-level efficiency. Combined with its 11-amps power, it renders its unparalleled brushes performance – hence its elevated price.
Note that its cleaning path covers almost 31 cm, which is more or less the standard home carpet cleaners of this type. Its couple of removable tanks (one for water and cleaning solution and the other for dirty water) are very easy to clip out and lift them up.
Its 3-metre flexible hose comes with a brush tool for cleaning upholstery, furniture, inaccessible areas, stairs, etc., all nicely carried in a detachable caddy.
We hate repeating ourselves, so mentioning over again its exceptional cleaning power, owned most to its admirably high suction power, will do, be it for pet owner carpets, kid vomit or really messy carpets. Stubborn stains or rather soiled areas won’t resist its combination of Super Boost Spray function and adjustable detergent. Dry time, due again to its high suction is considerably shorter too. All important parts bear labels, informing you of their purpose and best possible use.
Its 2-year warranty and excellent customer support seal the whole deal, making it undoubtedly the best bargain in our list. It hardly comes as a surprise that our Rug Doctor has received the CRI’s (Carpet and Rug Institute) Gold Seal award, the industry’s standard for cleaning effectiveness and more, contrary to most home carpet cleaners.
Designed for regular home carpet cleaning, the Deep Carpet Cleaner Rug Doctor rises to pro-standards and will get the job done, no matter its difficulty, faster, better and more efficiently than almost any other home carpet cleaner. If you can afford it, go for it.

Design & Features
Slim and robust, the Vax W86-DP-B Dual Power Carpet Cleaner is meant to breathe respect and sturdiness at first sight, and that is exactly what it does, especially with this fierce gloss black finish covering most of its outer casing. Note that, despite its durable built, it weighs less than 6 kg.
Featuring a set of traits that combined can remove even the most stubborn dirt hiding inside your rugs and carpets, this one will deliver deep and thorough cleaning for many years to come.
By far its best feature is its cleverly designed double tank technology that makes sure the clean and dirty water don’t mix while fighting your battle with the stains and dirt. The tanks themselves are a child’s play to empty or refill: just clip them in the proper spot and get them out of the cleaner’s main body. This is great since you will have to refill them several times in long cleaning sessions. Note that, being a family-oriented carpet cleaner, the cord will not let you go beyond an 8-metre radius. It is a bit sort in accessories (it doesn’t have an upholstery brush for example), but nothing you will really miss.
Another handy feature is the detergent’s tank screw cap, which helps you estimate the quantity you have to use and thus save considerable cost over the years.
When it gets to performance, you can hardly find anything more efficient in non-pro carpet cleaners. In most cases, you will be over and done even with the dirtiest carpets in less than 25 minutes, giving it back its colours, brightness and looks, no matter its material and type of surface.
There is a minor drawback though: its brushes are a bit tricky to clean, at least till you get the hang of it.
The Vax W86-DP-B Dual Power Carpet Cleaner is designed for home use, and if you don’t ask more of it, you will never be disappointed from its features and performance. Fast, efficient, it is ideal for families and couples leaving in small apartments, as well as people with kids and pets who can turn the house into a war zone in a matter of minutes.
Compact and light, but as mighty as it gets in non-pro carpet cleaners, it easily found a place into our 7-best list.

If you have large rooms, there is no problem at all with the 14.7-litre recovery tank; you don’t have to keep refilling and emptying. In fact, you can easily clean 13.7 square metres in one go.
There is a universal hand tool for upholstery with a 3.65M hose to deep clean stairs, upholstery or your car.

The Mighty Pro X3 uses a three-step process which includes a high-pressure system which sprays cleaning fluid onto the carpet, stiff brushes to agitate and high-powered suction to extract excess water/cleaning fluid.
Rug Doctor’s cleaning solutions are highly concentrated, so you don’t need much. You can save even more by purchasing a separate cleaning solution and just pre-soaking the carpet.
If you have pets, toddlers or old people living in your home and find you are spending a fortune on professional carpet cleaning, then this is a worthwhile investment. You can recover the cost of this machine on the second or third cleaning, and it certainly does a professional job.
Just bear in mind the weight, are you willing to have an 18 Kg machine around your home? If you are, you will save thousands of pounds in professional fees.
